Young woman with glasses considering LASIK

LASIK is a laser eye surgery designed to give you clear vision without glasses or contacts. In fact, it has set the standard for refractive procedures. LASIK has the best results for most patients, as well as having a fast recovery time.

Since LASIK is a permanent answer to refractive errors, the best time to get LASIK is right away. This will allow you to enjoy the vision benefits it can offer, and is a sounder financial investment.

Without needing to pay for contacts or new glasses, LASIK could end up paying for itself very quickly. In some circumstances, you will need to wait before you can get LASIK.

For example, the FDA requires you to be at least 18 years old to receive LASIK, and for good reason. When you are young, your vision is very unstable due to growth hormones that your body produces.

Your prescription needs can vary. If you were to receive LASIK during this period, there is a high chance that your vision would change after.

This would make the entire surgery useless, or even detrimental. In fact, you may need to wait until you are in your twenties before getting LASIK.

In general, your eyesight needs to be stable for at least a year before you can get LASIK. Keep reading to learn about other LASIK candidacy requirements!

Other LASIK Candidacy Requirements

Age is not the only thing that may prevent you from getting LASIK right away or at all, in some cases. Not everyone who wants LASIK should get the procedure.

These requirements exist to reduce the number of complications. If you find out you aren’t a candidate, there are other procedures like PRK.

Pregnancy

As with age, pregnancy produces hormones that can drastically affect your vision. You will need to wait until you have finished nursing before you can get LASIK.

In most cases, you should wait at least three months after nursing before getting LASIK. At this point, your vision must be stable and remain unchanged for a year or more.

Health

Since LASIK is a surgical procedure, you will need to be in good health before undergoing the surgery.

You will need to be free from any conditions that compromise your immune system and your body’s ability to heal. This includes uncontrolled diabetes or HIV/AIDS.

Eye Condition

You will be at an elevated risk of developing an infection while recovering from LASIK. Your eyes will also need to be healthy before getting LASIK.

Any scarring or diseases such as keratoconus may prevent you from getting LASIK as well.

There are many other things taken into consideration if you are considering LASIK. The only way to know for sure if you’re a good LASIK candidate is to attend a LASIK consultation.
